Coming Soon...

...to the City Hall in Kitchener, Ontario!  As described by curator Joan Hug-Valeriote, and posted on the SAQA Central Canada blog:

Contemporary Canadian Art Quilts :
From Fine Craft to Fine Art

Kitchener City Hall, in the Berlin Tower Artspace,
200 King St. W. Kitchener, Ontario,
April  8th until  May 30th, 2017.

Joan Hug-Valeriote is curating the highly anticipated multimedia art quilt exhibition which will take place at Kitchener City Hall and invites all area art quilt enthusiasts and arts supporters to visit the  exhibition during its run from April 8-May 30th, 2017.

The “virtual” component of the show is a continuous video display of over 100 Contemporary Canadian Art Quilt photographs compiled in a dynamic video collage of several universal themes. The quilt artists come from across Canada and their work will be displayed over a 5 foot square array  of 20 screens , plus a selection of the beautiful art quilts on the walls .

Two of my pieces join several of those by my colleagues in the "virtual" component of this exhibit; one -- Wide Alberta Sky --  is part of the trailer...at about 9 seconds in...

If you're visiting the area in April or May, be sure to stop in to see this unique exhibit by an all-Canadian cast of textile artists, celebrating Canada 150!

On My Wish List

Every Christmas, someone in my family sends me into bliss with a gift card for books, so I've just added this title to my wish list at Chapters/Indigo.  SAQA Central Canada's members have work featured in this book!  I mean, how cool is that?!

Quickly, in Passing

If you are able to see this Canadian SAQA Exhibit, please do!  I grew up near the Laurentians, travelled into them, camped in them as a Girl Guide, and drove into them on my honeymoon, so this exhibit tugs at my heartstrings...

Whether You're a Member...or Not...

be sure to check out the SAQA regional blogs from time to time.  Up here in the Great White North, there are three regions (!) for our vast land mass:  Western Canada (B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), Central Canada (Ontario and Quebec) and Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland).

On the Western Canada blog, we have a page entitled "Feature Members".  Therein is a weekly post of a profile of a SAQA Western Canada member, which enables us, spread so far apart geographically, to "meet" and get to know a bit about our colleagues.  Great fun! Anna has been working her way from "Z" and is approaching the beginning of the alphabet.  So...this week, Guess Who is featured?  :-)

(Thanks to my daughter for taking a new profile picture for me!  The quilt in the background is entitled "Ivy for Faithfulness" and hangs in my bedroom.)

Thank you, Mr. Solomon...

You made my day!

Circle Play - 2011
All of the work I viewed exhibited high artistic quality, and I found myself initially choosing way more than my allotment of 50. I then faced the agonizing task of deselecting many pieces I appreciated.*

*Michael Solomon, in his comments about judging the 268 pieces submitted to SAQA's 2011 Trunk Show, "This is a Quilt!"

As my piece was one of the ones at which he was looking, I am thrilled at his comment about its quality, and those of the others on exhibit.

While not included in the group that will reside in the permanent collection at Michigan State University, I am honoured to have had my piece shown in such august company -- including that of four Canucks from SAQA Central Canada, whose work will be in that collection!  Congratulations, all of you!

And my piece remains part of the Trunk Show available to tour Canada.  Find out how to bring this great exhibit to your local quilt show or guild by clicking here.
